Many new and aspiring home stagers worry that the current foreclosure crisis is a reason to stay out of the home staging industry. Home staging expert, Debra Gould explains why the “crisis” is not the whole story in real estate today and how the slow real estate market actually creates more staging business opportunities.
It’s all too easy to get depressed by all the negative news but it’s important to look for a balanced perspective. Many people have the impression that all the homes for sale are in foreclosure which would make building a home staging business difficult.
While it’s certainly true that many home owners are losing their homes to the banks, there are still plenty of people who need to sell their homes and move for all the usual reasons like divorce, death of a spouse, downsizing because the kids have moved out, new baby on the way, searching for a better neighborhood school for the kids, or a job transfer.
Anyone selling for these reasons absolutely needs to grab every advantage they can when the home they need to sell has to compete with all the foreclosures already on the market. It’s also worth noting that governments in both the U.S. and Canada are taking unprecedented action to slow the foreclosure rate and stabilize the market.
The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) hailed the U.S. government’s stimulus bill and home buyer tax credit because it will “help shrink housing inventory, bring stability to home values and move the country closer to an economic recovery.” President Charles McMillan forsees lower mortgage rates and fewer foreclosures as a result. The same can be said for Canada’s Economic Action Plan and tax incentives to help first time buyers.
